While it isn't a public holiday, Valentines Day is celebrated with considerable enthusiasm around the world, and represents an opportunity every year on February 14th for lovers to express their love and affection for each other with gifts, typically roses and chocolate. The holiday was named after an early Christian martyr of the same name. Not much is known about the figure, and it is generally accepted that the feast of Valentine traditionally held on February 14th did not come to have it's modern day meaning until the time of Geoffrey Chaucer who wrote of it in this light in his book Parliament of Foules. Regardless it is now the second largest greeting card event of the year second only to Christmas.
